West Liberty Street will host annual neighborhood revitalization project in October
Each fall, Salisbury residents roll up their sleeves and come together to make a visible difference in one City neighborhood. This year, BlockWork will bring that spirit of service to the 500 and 600 blocks of West Liberty Street on Saturday, October 24, as part of National Make a Difference Day.
BlockWork brings residents, volunteers and City staff together to complete exterior improvements to homes and properties along a selected city block. Volunteers may spend the day painting, landscaping, making repairs, power washing and tackling other projects, all with a common goal reflected in BlockWork’s longtime motto: “Neighbors Helping Neighbors One Block at a Time.”
This year’s location has an especially meaningful connection to that idea. BlockWork project areas are nominated by residents, and a West Liberty Street resident advocated for her neighborhood for several years. Now, volunteers will have an opportunity to help turn that persistence into improvements the neighborhood can enjoy long after the event is over.
While volunteers of all experience levels are welcome, BlockWork is especially seeking skilled workers who can lend their expertise to this year’s projects. Carpenters, masons, landscapers, painters and others with experience in exterior home improvements can play an important role in helping the City and neighborhood residents complete projects safely and successfully.
A project prep day is scheduled for Friday, October 23, followed by the main BlockWork event on Saturday, October 24. Volunteers will be provided with gloves, meals, snacks and drinks throughout the day.
BlockWork began in 2010 as an initiative of the Salisbury Community Appearance Commission’s Neighborhood Leaders Alliance. Today, the Community Appearance Commission and Housing Advocacy Commission work alongside neighborhood residents, City staff and volunteers from throughout Salisbury to continue the tradition.
