Department of Justice SPD Assessment Info Sessions

The Salisbury Police Department (SPD), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, will host public information sessions with City Council and the general public on Tuesday, Aug. 14 to announce the findings of a recent police department assessment.

In 2017, SPD requested the assistance of the Office of Justice Program Diagnostic Center to conduct an assessment of the department internal capabilities, violent crime trends and reduction strategies, and community engagement efforts. Beginning in November 2017, Diagnostic Center staff spent several months reviewing SPD reported crime and police call location data, conducted SPD and law enforcement partner agency staff interviews, and conducted interviews with key members of the community; including business owners, faith-based leaders, and neighborhood representatives. After gathering this information, Diagnostic Center staff developed a Training and Technical Assistance Recommendation report to provide SPD a guide for improving the police department and community response to violent crime.

As part of the implementation of the recommendations, this report will be reviewed by Diagnostic Center staff with City Council at a Special Public Meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 14 beginning at 10 a.m. in City Council Chambers, City Hall, 217 S Main St. The public will also have an opportunity to review the report with Diagnostic Center staff later that day on at 5:30 p.m. at the Salisbury Civic Center, 315 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave S.
