City Manager Greene names Jason Wilson interim utilities director

Salisbury City Manager Jim Greene has named Jason Wilson, P.E., as interim director of Salisbury-Rowan Utilities (SRU), effective Monday, July 1. Wilson currently serves as SRU’s assistant director.

Wilson joined the City of Salisbury in 2008 as a utilities engineer, managing capital and developer-initiated water and sanitary sewer projects. He was promoted the following year to utilities engineering manager with increased budgetary and cross-departmental responsibilities. In 2019, he was named to the assistant utilities director role where he coordinates public infrastructure projects, directs the department’s annual budget and manages SRU’s annual capital improvement plan updates.

As interim SRU director, Wilson will manage water and wastewater services operations for more than 53,000 customers throughout Rowan County. His duties will include performing strategic utilities planning, directing, and supervising public utilities construction. He will lead over 80 SRU personnel and coordinate engineering design and inspection programs.

“I am honored that the city manager trusts me to guide Salisbury-Rowan Utilities during the search for a new permanent director,” said Wilson. “My first day as interim director will coincide with the start of a new fiscal year, and we are excited to get started on new capital improvement projects that will reinforce the City’s commitment to providing quality water and wastewater services to customers throughout Rowan County. SRU will continue our practice to masterplan and be prepared for future growth and economic development opportunities when they arise.”

“Jason was a natural choice to assume the interim role upon the department director’s retirement later this month,” said Greene. “I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Jason on a number of SRU initiatives over the previous year. He has a strong command of utilities engineering and design, and has demonstrated his ability to lead complex projects. He will serve us well as we begin the search for a permanent SRU director.”

Wilson holds a bachelor’s degree in biological and agricultural engineering from North Carolina State University, and obtained his professional engineer license (P.E.) in 2003. He is a graduate of UNC-School of Government Municipal and County Administration, Leadership Rowan, the Salisbury City Manager’s Leadership Academy, and is a member of the American Water Works Association.
