Salisbury Public Art Committee opens Paint the Pavement call for entries

The Salisbury Public Art Committee invites artists of all ages and skillsets to submit their best designs for consideration for the first Salisbury Paint the Pavement Project. Entries will be accepted Thursday, April 1 through Friday, April 30. The installation date, also known as Paint the Pavement Day, will be Sunday, June 6.

Selected artists and teams will paint their design on one of five crosswalks in the Railwalk Arts District - at the intersection of Kerr Street and Lee Street, as well as on a new crosswalk at Lee Street Theatre and the Farmer’s Market Pavilion. Winning designs will reflect the history, culture and vibrancy of Salisbury, and display creativity and diversity. Designs cannot include words, logos or commercial speech, or advertising. Artists may submit up to five entries.

Designs must be submitted in high-resolution using the template included in the application at salisburync.gov/paintthepavement. Each design will need to fit in a 6’ x 25’ crosswalk space.

There is no cost to enter, and all materials will be supplied by the Salisbury Public Art Committee thanks to a grant from the Rowan Arts Council. On-site assistance will be available to selected artists and teams on Paint the Pavement Day. Salisbury staff will prepare the area before painting, and art works will be monitored and on display for a minimum of one year.

Rowan County artists, groups, neighborhood associations, community organizations, businesses, nonprofits, schools and/or churches are encouraged to apply. Designs will be selected by a local and inclusive jury.
