Salisbury Fire Department promotes Smith to Deputy Fire Chief

Salisbury Fire Department (SFD) Division Chief Terry Smith has been promoted to deputy fire chief. In his new role, Smith oversees the fire department's administrative, support services, and fire prevention divisions. He will continue to oversee the new Fire Station 3 construction project.

“It is my honor to announce Chief Smith as the deputy fire chief,” said Salisbury Fire Chief Bob Parnell. “With a 28-year career within the department, Chief Smith brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. Over the years, he has climbed the ranks, demonstrating leadership and a commitment to service. We look forward to continued excellence under his leadership.”

Smith began his career with the SFD in 1996 as a firefighter serving on Ladder 1 and Engine 3. He was promoted to Fire Engineer in 1999, Fire Captain in 2002, and Battalion Chief in 2005 first assigned to A shift, then transferred to lead the Fire Marshal’s Office in 2007. He was promoted to the rank of Division Chief in 2019.

He has been actively involved with organizations such as the Rowan County United Way, the Rowan-Salisbury Burned Children’s Fund, the North Rowan High School Booster Club and Salisbury Rowan Runners.

Smith holds an associate’s degree in fire science technology from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Additionally, Chief Smith has earned numerous emergency services certifications, including NC Fire & Life Safety Instructor Qualification and Advanced Fire Investigation.
