Parks and Recreation has new programs

Salisbury residents who have vowed to increase their exercise and learn a new craft this year are in luck. The parks and recreation department recently released its Winter Playbook, chock-full of fun progams for young and old alike. Bellydance for Beginners, Chair Volleyball, Poetry of Hip Hop, Splatter Art and Intro to Coding are just a few of the many new programs featured in this season’s offerings.

Classes are spread throughout the city’s five facilities – City Park Recreation Center, Hall Gym, Miller Recreation Center, Civic Center and the Park Ave. Facility.

“We have some great programs coming up this winter and spring that we are excited about,” said Parks and Recreation director Nick Aceves. “It’s helpful that the community has really stepped up to the plate in telling us what they want and providing volunteer instructors for some new and innovative programming.”

Classes include "Belly Dance for Beginners", which is taught on Thursdays at 5:30 at City Park by a 12-year veteran of the dance genre. Evolving from the ever-popular Pickleball games is the Chair Volleyball program. This program is designed to give participants a fun challenge while giving their upper body and good workout. For those 16 years and older who are interested in learning how to write computer codes, there will be an Introduction to Coding class on Thursday evenings in April beginning at 6 p.m. at City Park. Two Saturdays in February will focus on the history of Hip-Hop, storytelling and self-expression through the music genre.

“We plan per season for recreational programming, for example we will start planning now for summer programs,” said Teri Shaw, recreation coordinator.
