WALK THIS WAY

October 2025 is Pedestrian Safety Month. Check out these tips from the Transportation Department.

Week 1 (October 1-4): Pedestrian Facilities

Walk this way on the Greenway! The City of Salisbury has over 4 miles of Greenways for you to enjoy.

William C. Peoples, Jr. Walkway (Brenner Ave.) - 0.8 miles

Bill Stanback (formerly Prescott) - 0.8 miles

Grants Creek - 0.75 miles

Memorial Park - 0.4 miles

Forest Hills - 0.4 miles

Kelsey Scott - 0.3 miles

Old Wilkesboro Greenway - 0.6 miles

Take a quick stroll at the park! There are a wide variety of parks within the city.

Week 2 (October 5-11): Pedestrian Safety

Practice safe walking habits.

Choose the crosswalk. 74% of pedestrian fatalities occur at locations not at intersections.

Wear reflective clothing, especially at night.

Choose open headphones. This allows you to enjoy your music, audiobook, or podcast while still being able to remain aware of your surroundings.

Week 3 (October 12-18): Pedestrian Health

Stay hydrated, stay healthy.

Get out, get active. Walking daily decreases the risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Stand tall; posture matters. Poor walking posture can wear your muscles out faster, while good posture can help conserve energy.

Week 4 (October 19-25): Safe Vehicles

Pedestrian safety starts in vehicles. Slower speeds = lower risk of pedestrian fatalities. Every 10 mph of increased speed driven doubles the pedestrian mortality rate.

Be mindful of pedestrian facilities. Don't block crosswalks or sidewalks.

Stay aware of your surroundings and be mindful of typical pedestrian crossings.

Week 5 (October 26-31): Child Pedestrians

17% of children 14 and younger killed in traffic crashes in 2023 were pedestrians.

Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.

Be alert of vehicles, especially ones backing or turning.
