BlockWork’s Mission

BlockWork’s mission is to bring residents and community volunteers together to build cleaner and safer neighborhoods, one block at a time.

What is BlockWork?

BlockWork is a grassroots neighborhood improvement project composed of a one-day intense volunteer driven workday, with projects that include urban streetscape improvements, carpentry, landscaping, painting and other exterior home improvements. The idea for BlockWork grew out of the “broken window” theory, and is intended to inspire pride and catalyze change in neighborhoods that are suffering from disinvestment.

The BlockWork program was developed in 2010 by the Community Appearance Commission's Neighborhood Leaders Alliance (NLA). Each year BlockWork takes place on “National Make a Difference Day”, on the fourth Saturday in October.

Long-term maintenance responsibility is assumed by block property owners. The event is funded by the City of Salisbury, community grants, and many local sponsors. Monetary donations are accepted by phone at (704) 638-5240.

Nominate your block!

We're looking for neighborhoods for the 2025 BlockWork event! Nominations are due May 1.

Projects include carpentry, painting, landscaping and general clean-up in a one-block area. Long-term maintenance responsibility is assumed by block property owners, residents, and neighborhood participants.

  • Is your neighborhood within Salisbury’s city limits?
  • Is your block at least five blocks away from 2024’s BlockWork event? (1100 & 1200 West Horah Street)
  • Does your block have a project that could make an impact to your neighborhood?
