Recycling

Recycling is very important as a waste reduction step to reduce harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses being released in landfill sites. Recycling also reduces the amount of raw materials that need to be excavated for to create the products we use.

Residential and business curbside recycling collection is provided through a contractual agreement with Republic Services, beginning July 6, 2020. Automated trucks are used to collect your recycling and recycling collection occurs every other week on the same day as your garbage collection. Acceptable Items:

• Cleaned plastic bottles/containers numbered plastics 1, 2, & 5
• Cleaned aluminum, tin, and steel cans
• Flattened Corrugated cardboard
• Flattened box and paper board
• Mixed paper, newspapers with inserts, junk mail, magazines, phone books

Unacceptable Items:

• Glass (recycle at Rowan County facilities)
• Food
• Yard waste
• Frozen food containers
• Scrap metal
• Styrofoam, disposal cups/plates
• Plastic bags and plastic wrap
• Non-numbered plastics
• Hangers
• Toys
• Paint cans, hazardous items
• Ceramic materials
• Liquids
• Shredded paper
• Electronics
• Pizza boxes
• Dirty, soiled or unclean items

Recycling will be collected on the same day as your trash, on a bi-weekly schedule. Place your recycling bin at the curb, with the handle facing away from your house, by 7 a.m. on your collection day.

Glass is no longer accepted in your recycling bin due to how abrasive the material is on machinery, and current market trends. If you would like to recycle your glass, please visit https://www.rowancountync.gov/533/Recycling to find the nearest Rowan County recycling convenience center by you.

If a business is able to manage a recycling bin like a residential home, you are able to receive recycling services. Please contact (704) 638-5300 to set up recycling service.

Yes. Additional bins can be ordered for an additional cost. Please contact (704) 638-5300 to order the second bin. There will be no charge for the second bin, but there will be an addition collection fee that will be applied to your monthly bill.
