Summer Internship Inspires Local Students

“My first time meeting the finance department, I was shocked with how welcomed I was, how passionate the department is about their jobs, and how eager they were to teach me,” said Hawke Blust, accounting intern and Rowan-Cabarrus Commuity College student. Blust spent his summer interning with the finance department.

In addition to college students, the City also welcomes high school Summer Youth Employees each year. Five Summer Youth Employees were selected in 2018. To be chosen, students must submit an application and go through an interview process. The paid Summer Youth Employment program spans 10 weeks, and provides students with valuable work experience. 

Gwen Watkins was one of the applicants who were selected to be a Summer Youth Employee. Gwen said that her favorite experience interning with the city was being able to meet with the city attorney because one day she wants to become a lawyer. She said that she enjoyed the work because it allowed her to be in an office, but it also allowed her to be out in the community.
