Newsome Road Project

Salisbury City Council last month approved a construction contract to begin work on the highly-anticipated Newsome Road project. Expected to start in February 2020, the project will include a widened roadway on both sides, repaving, a sidewalk, bike lanes, and ditch removal to make way for new curbs and gutters.

“Newsome Road is considered an important roadway in Salisbury,” said Wendy Brindle, the city’s Engineering Director. “Not only does it connect Stokes Ferry and Bringle Ferry Roads, but is also the only connection between these two roads within the city limits. Bringle Ferry Road is a major thoroughfare to High Rock Lake and Dan Nicholas Park, and because of its connection, the road receives a lot of traffic. The widening and resurfacing will be a noticeable improvement to travelers and residents.”

Some years ago the City was granted federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) money to complete projects in Salisbury, such as sidewalks on Bringle Ferry Road, South Main Street, and near the mall. Newsome Road is the final project from the early applications.

Due to the complexity of the project and its federal funding source, the construction plans had to meet certain criteria before being granted permission to proceed. Those targets included design approval, right-of-way acquisition, Duke Energy support, environmental considerations and NCDOT sign off.

Residents should expect limited travel lanes along Newsome Road, along with detours, allowing for local access to homes along the road. Construction is expected to last just over one year, weather dependent.
