Council member Anthony Smith announces resignation from Salisbury City Council

Salisbury City Council Member Anthony Smith has announced his resignation, effective Tuesday, Sept. 17, as he prepares to relocate to Birmingham, Ala., for new career opportunities and to be closer to his family.

Elected to the City Council in 2021, Smith has been a committed public servant and a vital force in the Salisbury community. Beyond his work in the council chambers, he played a key role in strengthening community relationships through his involvement with the Human Relations Council and the Salisbury Youth Council. Smith, known for his passionate advocacy in confronting social and economic inequities, focused his work on improving life for all residents, while fostering a culture of inclusivity and equity in Salisbury.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Salisbury," Smith said. "This community has given me so much, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside such passionate and committed individuals. While I look forward to the next chapter in Birmingham, Salisbury will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for the privilege of serving. I pray that God will continue to bless and guide our city, and I look forward to seeing the great things that will continue to happen here."

Mayor Karen Alexander expressed deep appreciation for Smith's service. "Anthony Smith has been an extraordinary community leader," the mayor said. "His commitment to social justice, community engagement, and spiritual leadership has left an indelible mark on Salisbury. We are saddened to see him go but wish him immense success and happiness in his future endeavors."

In the coming weeks, the council will develop a process for filling Smith's vacated seat consistent with all applicable laws. Regular updates will be shared to keep the public informed throughout the process.
