Parks and Recreation Department welcomes new assistant director Rakeem Brawley

The Parks and Recreation Department has named Rakeem Brawley as its new assistant director.

Brawley brings more than a decade of experience and a deep commitment to recreation management. Previously, Brawley served as a recreation supervisor in the Town of Mooresville, where he built a reputation as a dynamic leader in the field.

In his new role, Brawley will collaborate with Parks and Recreation Director Keisha Coxe to develop strategic goals, expand programming, build partnerships, and engage with the Salisbury community.

"Our department is thrilled to welcome Rakeem Brawley to the team," said Coxe. "His impressive background and commitment to community engagement will be invaluable as we continue to enhance our services and recreational offerings."

Brawley expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, "I am honored to become part of a community that values recreation and the outdoors," he said. "I aim to enhance the department’s offerings and ensure that our parks and facilities continue to be a source of pride and enjoyment for all residents."

The Parks and Recreation Department oversees 508 acres of parkland across 29 properties. The department manages amenities such as a swimming pool, splash pad, sports complex, four recreation facilities, a community center with plans for a downtown event space, four tennis courts, six pickleball courts, 5.2 miles of the Salisbury Greenway, nearly 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, and urban trees and gardens.

Brawley earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in parks, recreation, tourism, and sports management from North Carolina State University. He is also a certified sports and entertainment venue manager.
