Forever for All: Honoring Mayor Karen Alexander
Legacy projects celebrate the life and service of a mayor whose leadership left a lasting impact
The City of Salisbury has officially launched the Forever for All Legacy Project, a lasting tribute honoring the life and leadership of late mayor Karen K. Alexander.
The project was introduced during a community gathering at the Historic Salisbury Depot held on March 4, which would have been Alexander’s birthday.
Alexander served the Salisbury community with dedication for more than a decade, first joining City Council in 2013 before being elected mayor in 2015 and again in 2019. Throughout her tenure, she championed economic development, thoughtful planning, and strong partnerships that strengthened the city and the region.
Speakers at the launch emphasized the breadth of her influence and the connections she built across North Carolina. “Her fingerprints are all over - not just Salisbury, but in our hearts,” remarked Mayor Tamara Sheffield.
The Forever for All Legacy Project will create a permanent space recognizing Alexander’s leadership and her commitment to community. Planned elements include a commemorative mural, a memorial garden at the Historic Salisbury Depot within McCurdy Park, and a bronze bas-relief plaque honoring her contributions.
In recognition of her extraordinary service, Alexander was posthumously awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor granted by the Governor of North Carolina.
For those who knew her and those who benefited from her leadership, the project represents more than a memorial. It continues her vision of a Salisbury defined by connection, opportunity, and civic pride.
The plaque and mural are expected to be installed this summer, while the memorial garden will be created once future renovation work on the Depot is complete.
