Salisbury Public Safety Nails “hair-raising” challenge in Support of Rowan County United Way

In a change from their personal grooming policies, Salisbury fire and police departments will allow male personnel to grow facial hair to promote awareness and support of the United Way of Rowan County during the “Public Safety No-Shave” campaign. Female personnel are permitted to wear more elaborate fingernail designs. The initiative is similar to other organizations that permit “dress down days.”

National Fire Prevention Week was October 7-13 with the theme “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware – fire can happen anywhere.” The Salisbury Fire Department felt that the theme was great but they wanted a message targeted specifically to Salisbury residents. Salisbury Fire Department and Life Safety Educator Kimberly Boling contacted Battalion Chief Forrest to survey all SFD members on a key message.

Severe Weather Alerts

Monday, Sept. 17: Flooding on major roadways into and through Salisbury has receded. Still, continue to use caution as you travel today. Here are a few reminders:
- Turn around, don't down. Do not drive through high water.
- If you come to an intersection where traffic signals are not working, treat that intersection as a 4-way stop.
- Don't drive over power lines. Treat all power lines as if they are live.
- Please make way for any emergency vehicles you may see on the road.

Stay safe!
Sunday, Sept. 16: The Red Cross is opening a shelter at the Hurley YMCA for residents in imminent threat or danger of rising water or those who have been directed to evacuate by a public official. The shelter will open at 9:30 p.m.
Bring pillows, blankets, medications and any other special needs.
Sunday, Sept. 16:
The following roadways are closed: "Innes and Rudolph, S Railroad and Military, MLK between Jake and MLK, Klumac between Jake to MLK, W Innes at Grove, Clubhouse and Confederate, Rowan Cir and Terrace Dr, Stokes Ferry at Travis Lane, E Innes and N Arlington St.
We will continue to update this list, if more roads are closed. Please remain sheltered unless travel is absolutely necessary.
Sunday, Sept. 16: Transformer fire at E. Innes and Ann St. Power lines are down. Use caution in the area.
Sunday, Sept. 16: Road closed at East Innes and Rudolph Road due to flooding. Use an alternate route.
Sunday, Sept. 16: Rain expected to continue today. Wind gusts should reduce later today/tonight. Scattered power outages may increase throughout today as trees and limbs continue to fall. Our major concern is flooding, especially tomorrow.
Saturday, Sept 15: Salisbury and RoCo are now on the leading edge of the storm. Expect heavy rain and wind for 48 hours. Power outages are expected, as well as possible flash floods. Florence is still a dangerous storm.
Friday, Sept. 14: ICYMI: For non-emergency questions, call (704) 216-8900 Option 7.
Friday, Sept. 14: Multiple traffic lights are out throughout the city. When traffic lights are out/dark, drivers must treat the intersection as a four-or three-way stop, depending on the road layout.
Friday, Sept. 14: Tree is on a house near N. Long + Kenly. E. Innes/Long St. and Monroe/Main traffic signals are out. Treat as 4-way stop.
