Salisbury City Council and city staff will host the fourth in a series of community town hall meetings titled, Chit, Chat & Chew, Tuesday, Oct. 23, with dinner beginning at 5:15 p.m., at Southside Baptist Church, 500 Morlan Park Rd.

Empire Hotel Redevelopment Process Continues

The North Carolina Local Government Commission (LGC) has approved the City’s financing plan for the Empire Hotel. The plan incorporates a Master Lease as a means for the developer to secure project financing. The LGC provides financial oversight to North Carolina local governments.

Fire station to be named in honor of fallen firefighters

On March 6, 2018, the Salisbury City Council unanimously adopted a resolution to approve the renaming of the city’s newest fire station to honor two fallen firefighters. The station will be named the Justin Monroe and Vic Isler Salisbury Fire Station No. 6 and Fire Academy.

Ride-A-Long Program Rides Again

The Salisbury Police Department (SPD) has reinstated its popular ride-along program that allows civilians to shadow a police officer. In 2017, the program was temporarily suspended in order for recruit officers to train with veteran officers in an accommodating and conducive work environment. Now that the department is fully staffed, Lt. Joe Miller requested that the program be reinstated for the police department.

“We are appreciative of Lt. Miller’s efforts to reconstruct the ride-along program for our residents,” said Police Chief Jerry Stokes. “The program will allow community members to ride as passengers in the departmental vehicles to observe police officers engaged in the performance of their duties. The reinstatement is a key element in our department’s commitment to raise community awareness of police operations while enhancing police and community relations within Salisbury.”

The purpose of the Salisbury Police Department’s ride-along program is to provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the department’s mission, goals and the many services SPD offers. Participants can also experience firsthand the decision-making processes officers utilize in addressing the various crime and quality-of-life issues affecting the Salisbury community.

In order to participate, interested participants must complete the online application or stop by the Salisbury Police Department. The program is designed for individuals 18 years of age or older. After being cleared and signing a liability waiver, the participant will pick a date and the adventure will begin.
