The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA, will host “COVID-19 for 19,” a virtual run, walk to raise funds for Rowan Helping Ministries food bank for COVID-19 assistance. The virtual event will begin on Monday, June 1, and end on midnight on Friday, June 19.

The $46,003,307 balanced General Fund budget reflects a 3.17% decrease in spending from the FY20 adopted budget due to expected shortages related to COVID-19. In addition to the General Fund, the Water/Sewer Fund, Transit Fund, Broadband Fund, and Stormwater Fund comprise the overall City budget totaling $82,528,220. This total sum also includes Special Revenue Funds (CDBG & HOME) and Capital Reserve Funds. Bailey proposes maintaining the current tax rate of $0.7196 for the fiscal year as to not burden the Salisbury community in the midst of economic challenges.

Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury announce musical guests, giveaways and more for the Virtual Cheerwine Festival

Cheerwine, the 103-year-old soft drink from Salisbury, N.C., and its hometown will host a Virtual Cheerwine Festival on Saturday, May 16, at 5 p.m.

Last month, Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury announced plans to cancel the annual outdoor event that draws tens of thousands of people and instead host a virtual celebration for all to enjoy from the safety of home.

Salisbury one of Four NC Entities to Receive $1.4 Million for EPA Brownfields Cleanup and Assessment

Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Wheeler announced EPA’s selection of four entities in North Carolina for Brownfields grants totaling $1.4 million. Recipients include the City of Gastonia ($300,000), the City of Kinston ($300,000), the City of Salisbury ($500,000) and the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments ($300,000).

Employee Spotlight: Scott Ludwick, Recreation Specialist

Scott Ludwick is a recreation specialist for Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department. In his role, Scott oversees rental requests for park shelters, serves as the assistant to the Salisbury Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and assists with the department’s marketing efforts.

Salisbury Police Department Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2024

The Salisbury Police Department’s Victim Advocacy Division, in collaboration with the Family Crisis Council of Rowan, Inc., is coordinating various events and initiatives throughout October to raise awareness concerning domestic violence as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

These events will be led by Dr. Alberta McLaughlin, the department's dedicated Victim/Witness Advocate, and Angel Chapman-McDavid, Executive Director of the Family Crisis Council. Their goal is to help community members recognize the signs of domestic violence, provide essential support services, and offer safety tips for creating an escape plan for those in danger.

Domestic violence is a widespread issue that includes willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and a cycle of power and control by one intimate partner over another. It often manifests as physical and sexual violence, threats, and emotional, psychological, or economic abuse.

“Domestic violence knows no boundaries,” said Dr. McLaughlin. “It impacts individuals from all backgrounds—regardless of race, economic status, sexual orientation, or nationality. This kind of violence is never acceptable in any form.”

The Victim Advocacy Division at the Salisbury Police Department is committed to offering support to victims and raising community awareness to prevent and combat domestic violence.

Angel Chapman-McDavid echoed the department’s dedication: “The Family Crisis Council is committed to supporting and empowering survivors of domestic violence. We provide resources to help individuals overcome traumatic circumstances and are devoted to educating the public on the deep impact domestic violence has on individuals, families, and communities.”

Activities throughout October include:

Wear Purple Wednesdays: Residents and supporters are encouraged to wear purple every Wednesday in October to show solidarity with domestic violence survivors.
Domestic Violence Awareness Event and Walk: This event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to wear purple in support of domestic violence awareness. More details will be provided in the coming weeks.
