Employee Spotlight: Vickie Eddleman, Traffic Engineering Coordinator

Vickie Eddleman has been employed with the city since 1999, starting as a traffic signal technician. In her current role as the traffic engineering coordinator, Vickie provides technical support for the traffic signal technicians, monitors the traffic signal system ensuring compliance with NCDOT, and handles citizens questions and concerns relating to traffic and pedestrian safety concerns, traffic signals and intersection or thru streets inquiries.

Lt. Walker promoted to Salisbury Police Department criminal investigations lead, PIO

Lt. Lee Walker has been named the public information officer (PIO) for the Salisbury Police Department (SPD), following the recent retirement of Lt. Greg Beam. Walker has been with the Salisbury Police Department since 2002.

Walker’s law enforcement career spans 25 years, beginning with the Appalachian State University Police Department. His previous positions with Salisbury include supervision of the patrol division, training supervisor, and patrol watch commander. In addition to his duties as PIO, he will serve as commander of criminal investigations.

Fire Station #6 Build Continues

Construction for the Justin Monroe and Vic Isler Salisbury Fire Station and Fire Academy on Cedar Springs Road continues to be an ongoing process. Due to the poor weather as a significant factor in the construction schedule delay, the project is running approximately three months behind.

Salisbury Transit suspends fares to support stay-at-home executive order

Salisbury Transit will suspend fare collections on all routes effective Tuesday, March 31, 6 a.m., as the system implements a rear-door entry policy to help keep passengers and operators safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, while still providing essential transit needs.

Salisbury Business System Bonds Fitch Ratings Improve

Fitch Ratings has assigned an 'AA-' rating to the City of Salisbury’s $38.7 million combined enterprise system revenue bonds, series 2020. In addition, Fitch Ratings upgraded the approximately $9.0 million combined enterprise system refunding revenue bonds, series 2010 to 'AA-' from 'A+'. The rating outlook has been revised to stable from positive.

Salisbury Mayor Declares State of Emergency

Mayor Karen Alexander declared a state of emergency for the City of Salisbury related to the COVID-19 virus (Coronavirus), following a similar declaration by Rowan County. The declaration authorizes the City to apply for financial assistance related to preparation, response and recovery of COVID-19 if needed through state or federal agencies.

City Looking For Public Input On 2021 CDBG Funds

City Looking For Public Input On 2021 CDBG Funds

On September 11, 2020 the City was notified of a second allocation of CDBG-CV funds in the amount of $200,221. To deploy these funds, Council will have to adopt an amendment to the FY20-21 Annual Action Plan to describe, broadly speaking, how the funds will be utilized. City Council held a public hearing on December 1 and opened a public comment period that ended on December 25, 2020. A draft was presented at the January 5, 2021 City Council meeting, and a public comment period closed on January 12, 2021.

The City of Salisbury is currently accepting applications for the CDBG grant program. All programs/agencies funded must be consistent with the objectives and requirements of the funding program. The primary objective of the program is the development of viable communities by the provision of decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanded economic opportunities, principally for persons of low- and moderate-income. The application deadline is Friday April, 9, 2021 at 5:00pm.

Input at a public meeting will be noted for the City of Salisbury’s Federal Fiscal Year 2020 allocations from The federal CDBG and HOME entitlement programs.
