The $46,003,307 balanced General Fund budget reflects a 3.17% decrease in spending from the FY20 adopted budget due to expected shortages related to COVID-19. In addition to the General Fund, the Water/Sewer Fund, Transit Fund, Broadband Fund, and Stormwater Fund comprise the overall City budget totaling $82,528,220. This total sum also includes Special Revenue Funds (CDBG & HOME) and Capital Reserve Funds. Bailey proposes maintaining the current tax rate of $0.7196 for the fiscal year as to not burden the Salisbury community in the midst of economic challenges.

Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury announce musical guests, giveaways and more for the Virtual Cheerwine Festival

Cheerwine, the 103-year-old soft drink from Salisbury, N.C., and its hometown will host a Virtual Cheerwine Festival on Saturday, May 16, at 5 p.m.

Last month, Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury announced plans to cancel the annual outdoor event that draws tens of thousands of people and instead host a virtual celebration for all to enjoy from the safety of home.

The Salisbury Community Appearance Commission and Salisbury Housing Advocacy Commission will be accepting BlockWork applications from Salisbury city neighborhoods beginning now through Friday, June 12. The 2020 BlockWork event has been set for Saturday, Oct. 24, on, “National Make a Difference Day."

Salisbury one of Four NC Entities to Receive $1.4 Million for EPA Brownfields Cleanup and Assessment

Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Wheeler announced EPA’s selection of four entities in North Carolina for Brownfields grants totaling $1.4 million. Recipients include the City of Gastonia ($300,000), the City of Kinston ($300,000), the City of Salisbury ($500,000) and the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments ($300,000).

Employee Spotlight: Scott Ludwick, Recreation Specialist

Scott Ludwick is a recreation specialist for Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department. In his role, Scott oversees rental requests for park shelters, serves as the assistant to the Salisbury Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and assists with the department’s marketing efforts.

SPD investigating shooting on E. Lafayette St.

The Salisbury Police Department is investigating a shooting incident in the 900 block of E. Lafayette St., which left one person dead and three injured. Two victims are currently at the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while one has been airlifted to Baptist Hospital in critical condition. Police are searching the area for additional potential victims.

Salisbury Public Safety Nails “hair-raising” challenge in Support of Rowan County United Way

In a change from their personal grooming policies, Salisbury fire and police departments will allow male personnel to grow facial hair to promote awareness and support of the United Way of Rowan County during the “Public Safety No-Shave” campaign. Female personnel are permitted to wear more elaborate fingernail designs. The initiative is similar to other organizations that permit “dress down days.

To participate in the "No-Shave" campaign, firefighters and officers must make a donation to the nonprofit currently in the midst of its annual fundraising campaign. Participation is strictly voluntary, and all proceeds go to United Way.

“I am extremely proud of our fire and police department personnel for supporting this incredible cause,” said City Manager W. Lane Bailey. “This campaign not only raises funds for United Way but the display of facial hair will serve as a reminder to the community of our public safety personnel’s efforts to support the needs of the community through organizations like United Way. I would also like to recognize the employees who choose not to grow facial hair but still support the cause. Their enthusiasm has been well received by residents.”

At the conclusion of the campaign, the facial hair of the participants will be judged and prizes will be awarded based on appearance. Firefighters will be judged solely on their mustaches as they are not permitted to wear beards due to the safety of their personal protection equipment, while officers will be judged on mustaches and beards. The winner will be announced on the city’s official social media accounts during January 2019.
