Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury announce musical guests, giveaways and more for the Virtual Cheerwine Festival

Cheerwine, the 103-year-old soft drink from Salisbury, N.C., and its hometown will host a Virtual Cheerwine Festival on Saturday, May 16, at 5 p.m.

Last month, Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury announced plans to cancel the annual outdoor event that draws tens of thousands of people and instead host a virtual celebration for all to enjoy from the safety of home.

The Salisbury Community Appearance Commission and Salisbury Housing Advocacy Commission will be accepting BlockWork applications from Salisbury city neighborhoods beginning now through Friday, June 12. The 2020 BlockWork event has been set for Saturday, Oct. 24, on, “National Make a Difference Day."

Salisbury one of Four NC Entities to Receive $1.4 Million for EPA Brownfields Cleanup and Assessment

Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Wheeler announced EPA’s selection of four entities in North Carolina for Brownfields grants totaling $1.4 million. Recipients include the City of Gastonia ($300,000), the City of Kinston ($300,000), the City of Salisbury ($500,000) and the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments ($300,000).

Employee Spotlight: Scott Ludwick, Recreation Specialist

Scott Ludwick is a recreation specialist for Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department. In his role, Scott oversees rental requests for park shelters, serves as the assistant to the Salisbury Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and assists with the department’s marketing efforts.

SPD investigating shooting on E. Lafayette St.

The Salisbury Police Department is investigating a shooting incident in the 900 block of E. Lafayette St., which left one person dead and three injured. Two victims are currently at the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while one has been airlifted to Baptist Hospital in critical condition. Police are searching the area for additional potential victims.

Salisbury’s new recycling contractor to begin July 1

Salisbury Public Works will introduce a new recycling contractor beginning July 1. Republic Services won the bid after a recent Request for Proposals to manage the city’s recycling program. New Look For Downtown

Downtown Salisbury is getting a new look. Salisbury City Council adopted the Downtown Main Street Plan at the Tuesday, March 16 Council meeting. Following multiple public opportunities for comment during design, the Downtown Main Street Plan consists of two phases to implement pedestrian and bicycle inclusion, landscaping, parking, infrastructure improvements, and transit mobility. Phase I transitional striping is set to begin summer 2021.

How did it start? While there was a previous proposal to change Main Street in 2004, the origins of this plan are the Behind the Curb series hosted by Downtown Salisbury Inc. in 2016. At that time, making pedestrian and bike improvements was one of the top-rated priorities of stakeholders.

The initial draft was presented at the December 2020 City Council meeting.

Why change? There are aspects of the current street layout that are unusual and do pose some safety concerns. The shallow parking angle (30 degrees) often means that large vehicles stick out into one of the travel lanes, causing vehicles to need to merge unexpectedly. Parking next to a large vehicle means that cars backing up have to do so blindly.

What will change? The Downtown Main Street Plan has two phases. Phase I is a restriping plan including:

Changing the angle of parking from 30 degrees to 45 degrees
Center turn lane to allow left turns from Main St. onto Innes St.
Restriping from four lanes to three lanes to include designated zones for delivery vehicles
Stamped concrete crosswalks at the intersection of Main and Innes
Addition of bike lanes on N. and S. Main and sharrows for increased bicycle travel (Horah to Kerr St.)

Phase II is a concept plan for what the downtown could look like in the future. This may include:

Pedestrian bump-outs at intersections to improve pedestrian visibility and space for streetscaping

Pedestrian bump-outs at key locations for outdoor seating/dining

Reconstruction of sidewalks for new trees/landscaping, lighting, trash/recycling bins, and bike racks

Completion of the long-range concept plan will depend on funding. A comprehensive FAQ is available online, along with more information at salisburync.gov/MainStPlan.
