U.S. Transportation Secretary Announces Grants to Revitalize North Carolina’s Bus Infrastructure

The U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will award $423 million in transit infrastructure grants nationwide to improve the safety and reliability of America’s bus systems and enhance mobility for transit riders.

Salisbury Highlighted in Annual Public Safety Partnership Report

The city of Salisbury and the Salisbury PD have developed a strong working relationship with their local federal agencies in conducting investigations. These relationships were built through the National Public Safety Partnership (PSP). This initiative enables cities to consult with and receive intensive training and technical assistance (TTA) and an array of resources from DOJ’s programmatic and law enforcement components to help locations build sustainable capacities and reduce violent crime.

This community event will be Wednesday, November 27, 2019. The holiday parade will follow the route of main street through Spencer and Salisbury's historic downtowns. The parade will begin at 2 p.m. in Downtown Spencer and reach Downtown Salisbury at 3 p.m. The parade will present musical acts, floats and more.

Salisbury to host second BlockWork clean-up day

The Salisbury Community Appearance and Salisbury Housing Advocacy Commissions are inviting residents and businesses to participate in a continuation of last month’s “BlockWork” neighborhood beautification project in the 900 block of N. Main Street, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 24, from 2 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Christmas Bike Giveaway

The Salisbury Police Department is partnering with Gerry Wood Automobile Dealership on the 18th annual Christmas Bicycle Program. The program provides bicycles for less fortunate children who reside within the city limits. The bicycles are limited and preference will be given to children of families who are in the most need of assistance. Children must reside at the given address of the parent/guardian and applicants must live within the city limits of Salisbury.

Salisbury Police begin “Community Classroom” series

Beginning next month the Salisbury Police Department will expand its community oriented policing efforts to include a quarterly informational series entitled, “Community Classroom.” Community Classroom is an interactive educational session for citizens, age 16 and up, which is taught by Salisbury police officers. The sessions are designed to provide education and insight into the various aspects of police work specific to the Salisbury community. Topics include: arrest, search, and seizure laws, decision making and the police use of force, crime scene investigations, and police-citizen interactions during traffic stops.

“The goal of this program is to give citizens an ‘inside look’ into police operations and our efforts to increase citizen satisfaction with police services,” stated Chief Jerry Stokes. “We are committed to transparency in both information and operations. Our goal is to create a community of ‘citizen-police officers’ that will partner with us to reduce crime in our city.”

The first class (arrest, search, and seizure laws) will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. at the Salisbury Police Station located at 130 East Liberty Street. To apply for a class go to salisburync.gov/communityclassroom or call a member of the police department’s community resource team at (704) 638-2092. A representative from the police department will confirm each attendee.
