The Community Engagement Department is responsible for developing and implementing programs that foster a thriving community and organizational environment, actively engages employees and the public, builds strong relationships internally and externally, and manages City communications and media functions while aligning these efforts with the City’s overall mission, values and Strategic Plan. With a focus on community, connections, outreach, employee engagement and workplace strategies, the department responsibilities include:


  • Effectively communicate City information to employees, the public and the media

  • Lead the development, marketing and implementation of community initiatives

  • Strengthen employee engagement

  • Manage, promote, and safeguard the City’s brand

  • Serve as liaisons to support the Human Relations Commission

  • Advise and assist departments with messaging

  • Monitor policies and practices to ensure organizational consistency, efficiency and fairness

Cemetery Clean Up

The annual cemetery cleanup is scheduled for March 12-16 in preparation for the seasonal cemetery mowing in early April. Residents are asked to remove flowers, gifts and other mementos off of their plots before Monday, March 12. Anything on plots during the week of March 12-16 will be removed and discarded.

After a year of discussions and planning, the new Teen Center at the Miller Recreation Center, 1402 W. Bank St., will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, March 3 at 11:30 a.m.

Following a call by citizens for fun, safe programming for youth in the community and affordable options for parents, the parks and recreation department began to formulate a plan to introduce a Center in early 2017.

Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) program in Rowan County in an effort to combat crime in the community. With the program’s revival, also comes a new PSN coordinator – Candace Edwards.

According to the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, “Project Safe Neighborhoods is a nationwide commitment to reduce gun and gang crime in America by networking existing local programs that target gun and gun crime and providing these programs with additional tools necessary to be successful.”

To commemorate the launch of Cheerwine’s second century, the City of Salisbury and Cheerwine are teaming up to host a Cheerwine-themed festival.

The free event will take place on Saturday, May 19, in downtown Salisbury from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cheerwine fans will enjoy cold Cheerwine, live music, great Southern food, shopping for Cheerwine merchandise, family-friendly activities, a beer garden and local craft vendors.
