Chestnut Hill

In 2001, the City of Salisbury paid for a survey looking at adding potential historic districts to the 10 districts already in place. Chestnut Hill was named as one that would likely be eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Yet in early 2013, a scheduled demolition of houses at 812 and 814 S. Jackson St. gave everything a sense of urgency. Within a matter of weeks, a task force formed and efforts began in earnest to revitalize the Chestnut Hill neighborhood just south of Salisbury’s downtown.

3rd Annual Salisbury Police Foundation Fundraising Luncheon

In 2024 we have been horrifically reminded of the life-threatening challenges our law enforcement professionals face on a daily basis. On May 1st, four officers were killed in Charlotte while trying to serve a warrant. On July 1st a CMPD officer died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Nationwide, in the first half of this year 71 law enforcement professionals have lost their lives in the line of duty, a 15% increase for the same period last year.

These are extreme examples of the very real danger that the people policing our streets and neighborhoods may have to deal with themselves. The average police officer may experience three or more traumatic events (i.e. – fatal accidents, murders, suicides, and life-threatening incidents against themselves or others) every six months of service and of those officers, 35% will develop symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD.

It takes special training for officers and support staff to be prepared when these events happen and specialized services to facilitate officer’s recovery from the trauma. Unfortunately, these programs can be expensive and are often not funded by the department’s budget. Salisbury Police Foundation (SPF) is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization whose mission is to support members of the Salisbury Police Department in areas of health and wellness, and recognizing the community’s indebtedness to their service that is outside of the city-funded budget. Our wholly volunteer board of directors is reaching out to you to support our men and women in blue.

We are seeking community wide help from private citizens, invested businesses, and other community-minded organizations to join with SPF by supporting our 3rd annual fundraising luncheon to be held at noon on Wednesday, September 18th, at the Country Club of Salisbury. Our keynote speaker this year is David Whisenant, former Salisbury bureau correspondent for WBTV News in Charlotte.

The fundraiser includes a Silent Art Auction with works donated by the Carolina Artists Guild.

You will notice that certain sponsorship levels include advertising for your support with our media partner and during the event. Some levels afford you and your team table slots so that you can come enjoy the luncheon and its program. Because of this I am asking you to notify us of your intentions to sponsor by Friday, September 6th.

Thank you and with warm regards,

John Struzick

The Dixonville-Lincoln Memorial is an upcoming project that will connect Salisbury's past with its present and future. This concept plan grew from a collective desire to pay tribute to the individuals who were buried at the Dixonville Cemetery, to interpret the history of the Dixonville-Lincoln area and to educate and inspire future generations of Salisbury residents.

Cemetery Guidelines

FOR CITY OWNED CEMETERIES

CHESTNUT HILL, OAKWOOD, MEMORIAL PARK, OLD LUTHERAN, UNION HILL/OAKDALE, OLD ENGLISH AND DIXONVILLE CEMETERIES

The City of Salisbury Cemetery Division reserves the right to regulate the method of decorating graves so that a safe and historical uniform beauty may be maintained.

  • Floral arrangements accompanying the casket or urn at the time of burial will be placed on the completed grave. They will remain there for approximately one week, at which time the Cemetery staff will remove and discard them. If the family wants to keep any of the grave arrangements, they should be removed before that one week is up.
  • The City cemeteries do not require a vault being used in burials. Please be aware that if a vault is not used that the ground will settle which means if you have a marker installed on the grave, most likely the concrete border around your marker will eventually crack and the marker may also start sinking. If a vault is used, there is still the possibility of the concrete border cracking due to swelling & shrinking of the stone due to hot or cold. This is not due to the Cemetery staff running over your marker or hitting your marker while mowing. The City shall not be held responsible for cracked borders or sinking markers.
  • The City of Salisbury is not responsible for any floral or tributes placed on a grave plot. If missing or stolen, you may file a police report by calling the Salisbury Police Department at (704) 638-5333.
  • PROHIBITED GRAVE ITEMS: Nothing is allowed outside of your marker. Fencing outlining of graves is not allowed, fabric printed pictures that cover the grave are not allowed, solar lights are not allowed, glass, metal or wood products, rocks, toys, life-size decorations, Christmas lights or any other potential projectiles are not permitted on cemetery plots at any time. Anything that could potentially kill the grass on the plot is also not allowed. The Management reserves the right to remove any items that do not conform to these limitations. This is for the safety of our crews since lawn mowers and weed eaters may come into contact with items placed on graves. If so placed and damage does occur, the City shall not be held responsible.
  • All floral arrangements must be in a permanent vase, on a saddle or in a hard plastic cone vase that sticks into the ground. If placed otherwise, and your flowers are damaged due to contact with our equipment, the City shall not be held responsible.
  • An "Annual Cemetery Cleanup/Flower Removal" is performed once a year most likely in February. You can call the Cemetery office at (704) 638-5250 to find out the definite date. Large blue signs will be erected in each cemetery about 2 months prior to the cleanup. During cleanup week, any items located on graves including flowers, solar lights or decorations will be removed and discarded. If you wish to retain any items, please remove them before clean up week. After the cleanup is completed, you can place your items back on your plot.
  • The City maintains 7 cemeteries and takes pride in keeping them looking neat. The mowing schedule allows each cemetery to be mowed every 10-14 days which is usually sufficient for each cemetery to look good until we get back to it. Please bear with us at times as rain and the crew having to stop to open and close graves plays a major role in keeping the schedule on time.
