RoCo Alerts still valuable communications tool, minus hiccup

Rowan County and City of Salisbury staff have few communication tools at their disposal to push emergency messages to the community. But none are more effective than RoCo Alerts. This new program has allowed us to send notifications to a large group of people at once for events such as severe weather, missing elderly residents, chemical spills, and lost children. If necessary, we are able to reach just over 55,000 residents between landline telephones, cell phones and email. While cell phone and email addresses are included via opt-ins, landline telephone numbers are included from the telephone company. Think of it as a reverse 911 call to your home telephone

Local Officers Read to Kids For Reading Month

March is National Reading Month across the United States. The Salisbury Police Department (SPD) encourages parents, caretakers and children of all ages to read not only in March but year round. Last month, the officers visited local preschools and elementary schools as part of their National Reading Month challenge to read and promote literacy in the community.

Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury to Cancel 2020 Cheerwine Festival

After careful consideration and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, as well as state and federal agencies, Cheerwine and the City of Salisbury, N.C., have decided to cancel this year's Cheerwine Festival, originally scheduled for Saturday, May 16. A virtual festival will happen instead, further details to be announced later.

The City of Salisbury filed a request for rehearing on Monday, April 13, with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to ask the agency to reconsider and change its decision to approve Cube Hydro’s (Cube) plan for improvements to Salisbury’s critical water supply infrastructure along the Yadkin River.

Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes This Winter

Cold temperatures can cause water pipes to freeze. The City of Salisbury encourages residents to start thinking about the possibility of pipes freezing in your home. Frozen water pipes are a problem that can happen in homes with both plastic and copper pipes. Take steps to protect your water pipes from freezing and avoid significant property damage.

Three steps to protect your pipes:
1. Insulate pipes in unheated spaces, such as a crawlspace, attic, or basement. Pipes inside or close to an exterior wall can be kept warm by opening the cabinet doors.
2. Remove and drain hoses from outdoor spigots. If there is a shut-off valve specifically for an outdoor spigot, turn the valve to the off position, open the spigot, and drain any water remaining in the spigot and pipe downstream of the shut-off valve. If you do not have a shut-off valve, it is recommended you contact a licensed plumber for costs and other information; however, if you do not have a shut-off valve in your plumbing system and need the water shut off in an emergency, please contact Customer Service at (704) 638-5300 (Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). For water and/or sewer emergencies after hours, call (704) 638-5339.
3. You can also let cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing; and FEMA states this will also reduce the buildup of pressure in the pipes.
As the temperatures rise, pipes frozen by the low temperatures will begin to thaw which can lead to pipe leaks. Residents can download the app or sign-up for the City’s free, secure service “EyeOnWater alerts” to track water usage and discover leaks long before they result in high bills or thousands of gallons of wasted water.
