The city of Salisbury and the Salisbury PD have developed a strong working relationship with their local federal agencies in conducting investigations. These relationships were built through the National Public Safety Partnership (PSP). This initiative enables cities to consult with and receive intensive training and technical assistance (TTA) and an array of resources from DOJ’s programmatic and law enforcement components to help locations build sustainable capacities and reduce violent crime.

'Tis The Season Spectacular Returns To Town

This community event will be Wednesday, November 27, 2019. The holiday parade will follow the route of main street through Spencer and Salisbury's historic downtowns. The parade will begin at 2 p.m. in Downtown Spencer and reach Downtown Salisbury at 3 p.m. The parade will present musical acts, floats and more.

Salisbury to host second BlockWork clean-up day

The Salisbury Community Appearance and Salisbury Housing Advocacy Commissions are inviting residents and businesses to participate in a continuation of last month’s “BlockWork” neighborhood beautification project in the 900 block of N. Main Street, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 24, from 2 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Christmas Bike Giveaway

The Salisbury Police Department is partnering with Gerry Wood Automobile Dealership on the 18th annual Christmas Bicycle Program. The program provides bicycles for less fortunate children who reside within the city limits. The bicycles are limited and preference will be given to children of families who are in the most need of assistance. Children must reside at the given address of the parent/guardian and applicants must live within the city limits of Salisbury.

The annual Veteran's Day Parade starts on the grounds of the Hefner VA Medical Center at 1 p.m., Monday November 11. A second parade leaves the VA hospital and reassembles in downtown Salisbury at 2:00 p.m. Local high school bands, Junior ROTC units, and Veterans Service Organizations all participate

Rowan County and Salisbury Fire Marshals team up for national campaign

The Rowan County Fire Marshal and the Salisbury Fire Marshal are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years—to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” The campaign kicks off on Sunday, October 6 – Saturday, October 12. The goal is to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

NFPA statistics show that in 2017 U.S. fire departments responded to 357,000 home structure fires. These fires caused 2,630 fire deaths and 10,600 fire injuries. On average, seven people died in a home fire per day during 2012 to 2016.

“These numbers show that home fires continue to pose a significant threat to safety,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.”

While NFPA and the local Fire Marshals are focusing on home fires, these messages apply to virtually any location. When developing a home escape plan, here are a few additional tips to keep you and those around you safe:

· Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.

· Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home including the basement.

· Clear clutter away from all exits in your home. Make sure windows can open easily and doors are unblocked.

· Escape plans include an outdoor meeting spot where everyone will meet. Once you get outside, stay outside.
