Employee Spotlight: Vickie Eddleman, Traffic Engineering Coordinator

Vickie Eddleman has been employed with the city since 1999, starting as a traffic signal technician. In her current role as the traffic engineering coordinator, Vickie provides technical support for the traffic signal technicians, monitors the traffic signal system ensuring compliance with NCDOT, and handles citizens questions and concerns relating to traffic and pedestrian safety concerns, traffic signals and intersection or thru streets inquiries.

Lt. Walker promoted to Salisbury Police Department criminal investigations lead, PIO

Lt. Lee Walker has been named the public information officer (PIO) for the Salisbury Police Department (SPD), following the recent retirement of Lt. Greg Beam. Walker has been with the Salisbury Police Department since 2002.

Walker’s law enforcement career spans 25 years, beginning with the Appalachian State University Police Department. His previous positions with Salisbury include supervision of the patrol division, training supervisor, and patrol watch commander. In addition to his duties as PIO, he will serve as commander of criminal investigations.

Fire Station #6 Build Continues

Construction for the Justin Monroe and Vic Isler Salisbury Fire Station and Fire Academy on Cedar Springs Road continues to be an ongoing process. Due to the poor weather as a significant factor in the construction schedule delay, the project is running approximately three months behind.

Salisbury Transit suspends fares to support stay-at-home executive order

Salisbury Transit will suspend fare collections on all routes effective Tuesday, March 31, 6 a.m., as the system implements a rear-door entry policy to help keep passengers and operators safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, while still providing essential transit needs.

Salisbury Business System Bonds Fitch Ratings Improve

Fitch Ratings has assigned an 'AA-' rating to the City of Salisbury’s $38.7 million combined enterprise system revenue bonds, series 2020. In addition, Fitch Ratings upgraded the approximately $9.0 million combined enterprise system refunding revenue bonds, series 2010 to 'AA-' from 'A+'. The rating outlook has been revised to stable from positive.

Salisbury Mayor Declares State of Emergency

Mayor Karen Alexander declared a state of emergency for the City of Salisbury related to the COVID-19 virus (Coronavirus), following a similar declaration by Rowan County. The declaration authorizes the City to apply for financial assistance related to preparation, response and recovery of COVID-19 if needed through state or federal agencies.

Fire Department hosts Open House regarding new fire station

The City of Salisbury Fire Department is planning to construct a new fire station in 2018 at 310 Cedar Springs Road, Salisbury. While the new station will serve the entire city, it will primarily service its own fire response district -- the incorporated areas south of the Mid Carolina Airport. The facility is identified as City of Salisbury Fire Station Number 6. Salisbury residents are invited to an Open House Wednesday, Nov. 1, 6 to 8 p.m. at Fire Station 2, 2312 S. Main St., to hear more information on this project.

Fire Station Number 6 has been planned for many years to provide timely emergency response in the areas of Camp Road, Long Meadow Drive, Grace Church Road, Airport Road and the neighborhoods of Stoney Brook, Kings Forrest, Matika Village, Little Acres, Weatherstone and the Long Meadow Industrial Park.

To facilitate the construction of the fire station, the Salisbury Fire Department identified approximately six acres of undeveloped property located at 310 Cedar Springs Road, just west of Highway 29 South. This site provides access to all the main roads and facilitates timely emergency response. The acreage offers plenty of space for the station and a significant natural buffer all around. The land was evaluated, tested, vetted and zoned appropriately for a fire station, and has easy access to utilities such as natural gas, water, adequate electrical power and sewer. The 310 Cedar Springs Road property possesses the attributes to build in an economically efficient manner. The City of Salisbury purchased the property specifically for the Fire Station project in early 2017.

City of Salisbury firefighters/EMTs will staff Station Number 6 on a 24-hour basis. The fire department’s training and safety officers also will be housed there. A modern fire truck and a reserve fire truck will respond from Station Number 6, as will the specialized Hazmat team’s multiple vehicles and support trailers. Building plans call for accommodations for 10 on-duty firefighter/EMTs (two fire teams and the above listed officers), a medical treatment room, equipment maintenance and storage areas and in-service training facilities. A four-story tower on the property will be used to air-dry fire hoses and as a prop for firefighter training. An emergency electrical generator will be installed in the case of a power outage. Office space designated specifically for the Salisbury Police Department will be located in the front administrative/office wing.
