The award-winning communications department serves as a central source of information by providing a singular voice and facilitating creative communication solutions for the City of Salisbury. In addition, this team strives to provide professional, timely and accurate public information, marketing and communications services to the citizens and visitors of Salisbury.

Department responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating the distribution of internal communications to city employees
  • Managing and coordinating City of Salisbury websites
  • Public relations management

  • Television services including TV stations and video production

Sonja Basinger is the environmental services manager for Salisbury-Rowan Utilities (SRU). In her role, Sonja serves as the department’s compliance officer. She performs internal audits for the department and provides technical assistance to divisions to ensure compliance with environmental permits. She also manages the water and wastewater labs, industrial pretreatment and FOG programs, and coordinates and instructs state approved Wastewater Operator Schools for SRU staff.

Salisbury Mayor Karen Alexander will lead the N.C. League of Municipalities as president over the next year, following her election earlier this week.

Alexander was chosen by representatives from cities and towns across North Carolina via electronic vote held over several days, with her selection announced at NCLM’s virtual conference, CityVision 2021, held Tuesday through Thursday.

Downtown Salisbury is getting a new look. Salisbury City Council adopted the Downtown Main Street Plan at the Tuesday, March 16 Council meeting. Following multiple public opportunities for comment during design, the Downtown Main Street Plan consists of two phases to implement pedestrian and bicycle inclusion, landscaping, parking, infrastructure improvements, and transit mobility. Phase I transitional striping is set to begin summer 2021.

The Salisbury Public Art Committee invites artists of all ages and skillsets to submit their best designs for consideration for the first Salisbury Paint the Pavement Project. Entries will be accepted Thursday, April 1 through Friday, April 30. The installation date, also known as Paint the Pavement Day, will be Sunday, June 6.
