The City of Salisbury Internship Program invites motivated, service-driven individuals to dive into the fascinating world of municipal government. This year's Internship Program will run from:

Spring Internship:

February 3, 2025 – April 25, 2025

Applications are due by January 3, 2025

Summer Internship:

June 9, 2025 – August 1, 2025


Applications are due by May 2, 2025

Individuals must commit to participate through the full duration of the internship program.

Interns will be paid $15.00 an hour and will not be eligible for employee benefits.

Qualifications

This application process is competitive as we have limited internship positions available. We are seeking candidates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Are currently enrolled in a technical, undergraduate or graduate program or recent college graduates with no/minimal (less than one year) work experience;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals of all backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives;
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines; and
  • A demonstrated interest in serving the community and a willingness to learn and take initiative.

Responsibilities

Internships provide hands-on work responsibilities in a variety of City departments. Interns will work on real projects, solve hard problems, and gain valuable feedback along the way. Here are just a few of the way interns contribute to our City of Salisbury teams:

  • Creating presentations, drafting reports and informational materials;
  • Designing content for social and digital media channels;
  • Compiling research and analyzing data;
  • Supporting and participating in special events and community meetings;
  • Designing marketing and promotional materials for print and digital use; and
  • Supporting the department’s administrative functions.

Application Process

The application for the 2024-2025 Internship Program is now open. Applications must be submitted before due date listed above. The application form requires you to:

  1. Complete the online internship application.
  2. Provide information about your academic institution, educational background, and areas of study, if applicable;
  3. Answer questions about the type of working environment and job responsibilities you are best suited for;
  4. Upload a copy of your current resume or CV; and
  5. Respond to an essay question with a brief written response.

Selection Process

APPLICATION REVIEW:

Human Resources (HR) will review all submissions to ensure each candidate meets the internship qualifications. Special consideration will be given to graduates of Rowan-Salisbury School System and students from Catawba College, Livingstone College, and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, aligning with our commitment to nurturing local talent.

SCREENING CALL:

Candidates who meet our criteria will be contacted by HR for an initial screening call. This is a chance for us to learn more about your interests, experiences, and suitability for the program.

VIRTUAL PANEL INTERVIEW

A competitive number of finalists with strong skills and experience match will be invited to a virtual panel interview, allowing for a dynamic interaction and a deeper insight into each candidate's capabilities and potential fit within the program.

COHORT SELECTION AND PLACEMENT

After collective review the panel will select the final cohort based on the interviews, curating a diverse and talented group ready to embark on this enriching experience. Selected interns will be thoughtfully matched with City

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the duration and time commitment for the internship?
This year’s internship program runs from February 3, 2025, to August 1, 2025 (Spring, Summer). Interns must commit to participating until the end of their offered internship duration.

Do the City of Salisbury interns receive compensation or benefits?
Yes, interns are paid an hourly wage and can ride the Transit bus for free with their ID badge. However, they are not eligible for employee benefits (health insurance, dental, etc.).

What is the pay for interns participating in the program?
Interns will be paid $15.00 an hour.

Is there an option to work remotely?
The internship program is designed to provide hands-on experience. Interns are expected to report to their assigned office for the duration of the program.

Will a memorandum of understanding be needed from my school in order for me to intern with the City of Salisbury?
Yes, the City of Salisbury and the school will need to have a signed memorandum of understanding on file.

Will I have an opportunity to apply for a job with the city after my internship?
