To provide a safe, efficient, and affordable transportation alternative to the general public in the cities of Salisbury, Spencer, and East Spencer; thus permitting greater accessibility to employment, social, recreational, educational, and medical facilities.

The department also provides an ADA demand responsive paratransit system that includes wheelchair lift-equipped vans to accommodate citizens unable to access our fixed route bus system because of a functional disability. Our bus system is open to the public.

The City of Salisbury's bus system has three regular routes and two weekend routes. Each of these routes arrives and departs from the central Transfer Site located on Depot Street. Any bus you board can take you to the Transfer Site. Salisbury Transit buses do not operate on some holidays.


Inclement Weather

Routes and schedules may be affected by adverse weather conditions such as ice and snow. For information concerning altered bus schedules, subscribe to the City's Nixle texting service, watch News Channel 14, WSOC Channel 9, WBTV Channel 3, listen to local radio stations, or call Transit Operations.


Title VI

Any person who believes they have been mistreated by an unlawful discriminatory practice under Title VI has a right to file a formal complaint with Salisbury Transit.

ADA/Paratransit

The City of Salisbury’s ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) transportation system is available to transport functionally disabled individuals to many different destinations within the cities of Salisbury, Spencer and East Spencer, utilizing wheelchair lift-equipped vans.

Any printed material will be provided in an alternative form upon request.

Fares

Standard one-way fare to ride a Transit bus is only $1.00 - students and seniors are eligible for discounts. Tickets and passes are available at reduced rates. Salisbury Transit passes can be purchased at the Salisbury Customer Service Center.

How to Ride

General Information

Route Names

Routes are named with both color and number. The destination signs on the front of the bus are changed to show the next major destination of the bus.

Transfers

If you need to transfer from one route to another to complete your one-way trip, ask the bus driver on your first bus for a transfer ticket. transfers are only good for the next connecting bus from the Transfer Site. All buses transfer at the Depot St. site ONLY.

Attire

For everyone’s health and safety, appropriate clothing is required (i.e. top, pants, shorts, skirt, shoes, etc.).

Phones/Electronics

Radios, electronic games and other similar devices can distract the driver and other passengers. These items are prohibted on city buses unless they are properly used with headphones. Don’t use mobile phones when entering and exiting.

Lost and Found

If you lost or left something on the bus, please call (704) 638-5252. Unclaimed items will be discarded after 30 days.

Riding Tips

Waiting for the Bus

  • Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.
  • When waiting for the bus, stand at the nearest bus stop.
  • Each bus is identified by a route name and color.
  • Look at the headway sign above the windshield for the route name, number and next destination.
  • Do not approach the bus until it has come to a complete stop.

Entering the Bus

  • Enter through the front door.
  • Before enterting the bus, have your exact money, ticket or pass ready.
  • Drivers are not able to make change.
  • If you need to get a transfer for the next bus, please inform the driver as you enter the bus.
  • Transfers are only good for continuous passage on the first connecting bus at the Transfer Site.

Exiting the Bus

  • You must exit the bus through the rear door. This small effort will help keep the buses on schedule.
  • One block from your stop, gather your belongings and ring the bell. This will signal the driver to stop at the next bus stop.

Safety

Safety Instructions

  • Children are not permitted to ride in strollers while on the bus.
  • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Strollers must be closed and stowed safely while on the bus. Disruptive and unlawful behavior, or abusive language are not permitted.
  • Riders are not allowed to record audio or visual while on the bus.
  • Take your seat as soon as possible.
  • The aisle must be clear.
  • Surveillance cameras are in use on every bus for your safety.
  • Open cans, bottles and food are not allowed.
  • Eating and/or drinking is not allowed.
  • Smoking, alcoholic beverages and profanity/cursing is not allowed.
  • To carry, possess, or have within immediate access any dangerous weapon is not allowed.
  • Do not change seats unless absolutely necessary.
  • Possession, use or sale of any controlled substance is not allowed.
  • Possession or transporting of any flammable liquid, combustible material or other dangerous substance is not allowed.

The Transportation Advisory Board serves as the advisory board for the Transit Division and the City. The board serves as a liaison between the Division, the Manager, the City Council and citizens of the community.

A Look Behind The Scenes

 The Salisbury Citizen’s Academy, a 10-week academy in which residents learn firsthand about city operations, is now accepting applications for class members. The Citizen’s Academy, now in its sixth year, is held on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Thursday, Sept. 5 through Thursday, Nov. 7.
