The Salisbury City Council announces several leadership changes, including the appointment of Tamara Sheffield as Mayor and Harry McLaughlin as Mayor Pro Tem. Additionally, Susan Kluttz—who previously served on the Salisbury City Council and as Secretary of Cultural Resources under Governor Pat McCrory—has been selected to fill the vacancy created by Mayor Pro Tem Sheffield’s new role. All three will be sworn in on Tuesday, February 18, and will serve until the next city election in November.
During her 14 years of service on the Salisbury City Council, Ms. Kluttz demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing community needs, fiscal responsibility, and public engagement. In her role as Cabinet Secretary, she championed the preservation of North Carolina’s cultural heritage of arts, history and libraries. She oversaw the merger of her department with Natural Resources, expanding the department to include state parks, aquariums, science museums and the North Carolina Zoo.
“We are thrilled to have Susan’s breadth of experience back in a municipal role,” said Mayor Pro Tem Sheffield, “Her extensive experience in local governance and statewide cultural advocacy will greatly benefit our community as we navigate future challenges and opportunities.”
Ms. Kluttz remarked on her return to council service, saying, “It’s an honor to serve Salisbury during this important transition. My previous service has given me a deep appreciation for local government’s role in enhancing quality of life, and I look forward to partnering with Mayor Sheffield, Mayor Pro Tem McLaughlin, and the entire council to help and support them in any way I can.”
Ms. Kluttz’s term will conclude with the regularly scheduled city election in November, when voters choose who will fill the seat going forward.
