Applications Now Open For FY2022-23 CDBG Funds

The City of Salisbury is currently accepting applications for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to aid in development needs within the City of Salisbury, NC. During the period between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, the City will receive approximately $315,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME program dollars from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Citizen input is needed to help determine community development needs and priorities for the use of these funds in the coming year. Applications are due on April 20, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.

Employee Spotlight: Lauran McCulloh, Battalion Chief

This month’s employee spotlight is Lauran McCulloh, a battalion chief for the City of Salisbury Fire Department (SFD). Immediately after graduating from South Rowan High School, Lauran attended firefighter training school and after completion joined the SFD. In her role, Lauran serves as the lead commander for any emergency incident that requires multiple companies to respond. She is also responsible for administrative duties, oversees safety and training of firefighters and ensures reports are up to date.

City of Salisbury named Tree City USA for 36th consecutive year

The City of Salisbury has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of the city’s commitment to effective urban forest management. This is the 36th year Salisbury has earned the national designation.

Grammy-winning Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors to headline 2022 Cheerwine Festival

Cheerwine, the iconic 105-year-old soft drink, and its hometown of Salisbury will welcome two of the country’s favorite rock bands to the Hotwire Communication Stage as this year’s headliners.

Blues Traveler, the Grammy-winning quintet, is best known for their Top 40 singles "Run-Around,” "Hook,” and "But Anyway,” as well as their improvisational live shows. The Grammy-nominated Spin Doctors rose to fame for their 5x platinum album Pocket Full of Kryptonite and hits "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong.”

Downtown Salisbury receives grant for small businesses

-Hometown Revitalization Grant funded by Duke Energy Foundation-

Downtown Salisbury, Inc. (DSI) receives a $25,000 Hometown Revitalization Grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to support downtown businesses.

“We are honored and grateful to be one of 20 organizations named as a recipient of the Duke Energy Grant in this most recent round of gifting,” said Sada Troutman, Downtown Salisbury, Inc. Director. “It goes without saying, the past few years have been incredibly trying for small businesses across the country, and Downtown Salisbury is no exception. This $25,000 will allow DSI to create a grant program that will provide small businesses funding to bring visions and business expansions to life. This will continue to make Downtown Salisbury a vibrant community asset and destination for tourists and residents alike.”

The supporting small business support awards will focus on businesses with fewer than 50 employees and small businesses should have a storefront presence in the designated Downtown Salisbury Municipal Services District (MSD). Business owners located within the boundaries of the Downtown Salisbury MSD are invited to apply for grants between $500 and $2,500.

Appropriate small business expenditures may include:
• Enhanced service or commerce opportunities
• Furniture for expanded outdoor capacity
• Storefront beautification
• Tools or programs to support the business’s workforce needs

Grant applications will be available by 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, via the Downtown Salisbury, Inc website or can be picked up at the DSI office located at 217 S. Main Street. Completed grant applications will be due to Downtown Salisbury, Inc by Wednesday, December 21.
