Improving the Future Health of City Park Lake

Recognized as a “Tree City USA” locality for more than 30 years, the City of Salisbury is dedicated to the health, vitality and well-being of our city trees. Now that we are able to move forward with the City Park Lake project, we have to think about the best uses of the park as a whole and the long-term effects of the landscaped areas around it.

Hurley Park pond dredging process begins in early September

One of Salisbury’s most treasured parks renowned for its blooming flowers, tree species and water feature is undergoing maintenance for a near two-month period beginning in early September. The Hurley Park maintenance project will focus on dredging the pond and maintaining the fountain on the east side of the park by Lake Drive.

Celebrate Nature At The Butterfly Release!

The upcoming Hurley Park Butterfly Release on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m., is a great event at which to learn about Monarch butterflies and other butterfly species, their migration, and milkweed (their host plant). Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to find a good seat as the release happens quickly. Food trucks will be available for food purchase.

The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department invites handlers and their beloved pooch to enjoy a refreshing swim at Fred M. Evans Pool on Saturday, September 7, 1 to 5:30 p.m. for the annual Doggie Dip Swim Party. This special day is for all well-mannered dogs and their handlers to enjoy the sun and water while meeting others who share the same interest.

Human Relations Council hosts educational support faith forum

The Covenant Community Connection (CCC), a subcommittee of the Salisbury Human Relations Council, hosts a “Supporting Public Education” workshop, Saturday, March 26, First Presbyterian Church, 308 W. Fisher St., from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Masks are required.

Rev. Susan Miller of Pastors for NC Children and Rev. Dr. Vincent Howell of Hood Theological Seminary will lead the discussion on how N.C. faith groups can support public education through local action and policy engagement at the local and state levels. The discussion includes information on creating local faith networks to support students and families for better public education.

“All faiths and religions share the understanding that we are called to serve something higher than our self-interest,” said CCC Chair Dr. Susan Lee, “and that we are called to be of service to others. Supporting public education is fertile ground for serving others, both through policy action and through charitable action. When we engage in policy action we serve our democracy and the common good of a future we have yet to see.”
