The Salisbury Police Department is proud to announce the promotion of Lieutenant Travis Shulenburger to the rank of Major, where he will assume command of the Criminal Investigations Division.
Major Shulenburger is a graduate of West Rowan High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He began his law enforcement career with the Salisbury Police Department in 2004 and quickly established himself as a leader dedicated to investigative excellence and accountability.
After serving in the Patrol Division and as a Field Training Officer, Major Shulenburger transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division in 2007. In 2014, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned as a day shift patrol supervisor. He returned to the Criminal Investigations Division in 2015, where he played a key role in restructuring CID into separate Violent Crimes and Property Crimes units to improve focus, efficiency, and case outcomes.
Major Shulenburger served as the Violent Crimes Sergeant until 2020, when he transitioned to Internal Affairs and Professional Compliance, overseeing critical functions related to officer accountability and department standards. In 2023, he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned back to the Patrol Division, where he has continued to lead officers and support frontline operations.
In addition to his investigative and command experience, Major Shulenburger joined the Salisbury Police Department’s Special Response Team in 2008. He served as a Team Leader and later as Assistant Commander, a role he held until 2023.
“Major Shulenburger brings deep institutional knowledge, proven leadership, and extensive investigative experience to this role,” said Salisbury Police Chief P.J. Smith. “His work in building and leading our Criminal Investigations Division has had a lasting impact on this department and the community we serve.”
As Major of the Criminal Investigations Division, Shulenburger will oversee all investigative operations, continuing the department’s focus on thorough investigations, victim-centered casework, and strong partnerships with prosecutors and the community.
