Quick tips, accepted materials, and collection reminders for Salisbury residents
The City of Salisbury launched its new City-operated curbside recycling program on July 1, replacing the third-party service previously used to serve residents. Bringing recycling in-house allows for greater oversight and improved service.
As we settle into the new program, we’re asking everyone to take a few minutes to refresh their recycling knowledge. Recycling the right way helps keep workers safe, reduces costs, and supports a cleaner, more sustainable Salisbury.
Reducing Contamination
The City is partnering with Prairie Robotics to reduce the rate of contamination in our curbside recycling. Contamination includes items that are not allowed in your recycling bin, such as glass, styrofoam, or plastic bags. Reducing incorrect items in cards helps keep workers safe, keeps our equipment running properly, and keeps costs low for residents.
Smart technology in our new recycling trucks will detect contamination in curbside carts. You may receive postcards in the mail with reminders about what is allowed in recycling carts. Repeated violations may result in removal of your curbside cart until the issue is corrected.
Proper Cart Usage
For collection day:
• Place carts at the curb by 7 a.m., positioned with the handle toward your home.
• Leave three feet of space between carts and other obstacles, such as mailboxes, vehicles, utility poles, and other curbside carts.
• Keep the lid completely closed. No overflow allowed.
• Place recyclables loose in the cart. Bagged recycling will not be accepted.
When drivers notice cart-related violations, they will place a tag on your cart explaining the problem so you can correct it before your next collection day. Repeated violations may prevent cart pickup.
