Hurley Park event celebrates nature and a longtime friend of the park
Experience the magic of butterflies up close during Gerry Hurley’s Butterfly Release, Sunday, October 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hurley Park. The butterfly release program begins promptly at 2 p.m., so plan to arrive early.
Presented by the Hurley Park Advisory Board and Salisbury Parks and Recreation, the annual event has been renamed this year in memory of Gerry Hurley and her love of butterflies. Hurley delighted in seeing children experience the wonder of the butterfly release, and the Advisory Board chose to rename the event as a fitting tribute to her memory and dedication to Hurley Park.
All-A-Flutter Farms will teach attendees about the butterfly life cycle as part of the release program, followed by the hand-release of 50 Monarch and 50 Painted Lady butterflies. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with the butterflies and experience the release firsthand.
The Hurley Park Advisory Board will also distribute milkweed plants on a first-come, first-served basis. Milkweed serves as the host plant for Monarch butterflies, providing an important place for them to lay their eggs and a food source for developing caterpillars.
The event will take place in the Annex section of Hurley Park, the large green space across from City Park Lake.
