Downtown mural honoring Mayor Karen Alexander expected to take shape in November
The City of Salisbury’s Forever for All Legacy Project is moving forward with the installation of a new downtown mural honoring the life and legacy of the late Mayor Karen K. Alexander, who passed away in 2024.
Created by North Carolina artist Max Dowdle as part of the Legacy NC: 100 Murals in 100 Counties initiative, the mural will be located on the southwestern exterior block wall of the Piedmont Players’ Meroney Theatre building at 213 S. Main St.
The design features two hands reaching toward one another to form a bridge, symbolizing connection, unity, and shared purpose. Adorned with colorful native flowers, the artwork also incorporates Salisbury’s iconic Bell Tower and a pearl bracelet in tribute to Mayor Alexander.
Following months of design development and community input, preparations are underway for the mural’s installation. Painting is expected to begin in early November, weather permitting, followed by landscaping later in the month. A community celebration and dedication are tentatively planned for early December, with additional details to be announced.
The mural is one of several elements of the Forever for All Legacy Project, created to celebrate Mayor Alexander’s lasting contributions to Salisbury and the community she loved.
