Two years after the groundbreaking ceremony at Dixonville Cemetery, the city’s Dixonville-Lincoln Memorial Task Force is now ready to begin phase two.
“The Task force is excited to begin phase two of the three-phased Dixonville-Lincoln Memorial Project,” said Emily Perry, chairwoman of the Dixonville-Lincoln Memorial Task Force.
“We remain committed to honoring the individuals who were interred in the Dixonville Cemetery while educating and inspiring future generations of Salisbury residents. Thank you to the City of Salisbury, the numerous donors and everyone who has attended, sponsored, volunteered or supported the Ministries of Comedy events. We are asking for donors to help us finish the project and showcase the prominence of the early African-American cemetery.”
Some highlights of phase two will include an Interpretive Walk connecting the Memorial Walk to interpretive stops along a perpendicular path to a high point in the cemetery. This will allow visitors to gather, study and reflect on the history of the cemetery and the Dixonville neighborhood. On top of the hill, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will install a “Here’s My Story” bench to tell the history of various locations throughout Salisbury.
